Worcestershire – January 2012

I went to stay with my god mother again in Worcestershire. Some boys cut the hedges surrounding her fields and burnt it.

Occupy Bristol

Occupy Bristol.

Occupy Bristol is a camp made up of tents of found and materials is situated between the Cathedral and the Bristol council buildings. Anarchists and ordinary people have camped here for months to make a stand against Capitalism for a fairer more equal society. We live in a time of government cuts, unreliable employment and inflated house prices.

Bristol City Council and the cathedral will evict the remaining Occupy Bristol demonstrators in the next few days. They are protesting for the good of everyone to create a fairer more equal society and have built their own houses! A few of the protestors are still living here.

I walked around with my friend Fiona and took some photos from afar.

I think I prefer the waterfront in Winter. The light is so dramatic and I like the inky black and gold reflections in water. I always feel like I am on holiday when I walk around the harbour.

Gable and Lombard

My claim to fame 2 generations back! * * *
I have found a picture of my Great Uncle Eric golfing with Carole Lombard and Clark Gable on the elegant obsession blog.
I have just discovered today Eric Tyrrell-Martin and his wife were good friends with the Hollywood couple. My granny (Eric’s sister) said she lost touch with him because he married an American and never came back to England. How amazing to find this image. One day I would love to go on holiday to California.

The man on the left next to Carole and Clark in the golfing photo is Eric.

My Great Uncle Eric’s wife Babs Tyrrell-Martin. Eric Tyrrell-Martin was captain of the English polo team. I can’t believe they were friends with Carole Lombard and Mary Duncan the Hollywood actresses. I wonder if I have some glamorous relatives in America. One day I would like to go to California it looks such fun.

Mary Duncan Sanford and Babs Tyrrell-Martin grace this photo, most probably taken during the 12th competition for the Westchester Cup, in 1939 at Meadow Brook, Long Island, where the best polo players of the U.S. and the U.K. were competing for a trophy first put up for grabs in 1886.

On the left, Mary Sanford. As Mary Duncan, she starred on Broadway, went to Hollywood and appeared in 16 films, including 1931’s Five and Ten with Marion Davies. It was Davies who introduced Mary to Stephen “Laddie” Sanford after a polo match in Santa Barbara. Sanford, whose Hurricanes won the U.S. Open Polo Championship five times in three different decades, had appeared on the cover of Time magazine, hung out with Cole Porter, summered on the French Riviera, and was heir to the Bigelow-Sanford carpet fortune. In 1933, Mary gave up her acting career and married Laddie. They settled…

My garden

Images of my garden, Cotswold Road, Windmill Hill, Bristol. I like to keep my garden wild and natural so I feel like I am in the countryside in contrast to the industrial views that surround me. In the olden days it would have been a traditional Victorian kitchen garden. One side has no fence just ancient shrubs. I have an apple and plum tree, a pond with frogs, a fire pit and a river/stream at the end of the garden.
